In 2023, the German gaming industry experienced notable growth, increasing its market value by 6% to reach €10 billion. This increase was significantly fueled by the mobile gaming sector, which experienced a revenue boost of 4%, reaching €2.9 billion. This marks a notable rise from 2018 when mobile gaming revenues were approximately €1.5 billion.
These findings come from a recent report by the German Games Industry Association, based on data gathered by Data.ai. The report indicates a considerable improvement compared to the previous year’s modest 1% growth in the industry.
The surge in market value was largely driven by sales of gaming consoles and accessories, as well as in-game and in-app purchases. In-app purchases made up a significant portion of mobile game revenue, accounting for 98% of the total. Online gaming services contributed €43 million to the market, while sales of individual games amounted to less than 1% of the total revenue, approximately €5 million.
In addition to financial growth, the report highlighted an increase in the number of mobile gamers in Germany. The player base grew by 300,000, reaching 24.6 million in 2023. Interestingly, the demographic data showed that women make up a slightly larger portion of mobile gamers, at 52%, compared to 48% for men.
Felix Falk, the managing director of the German Games Industry Association, commented on the persistent growth in the mobile gaming sector. He remarked that the growing use of smartphones has significantly broadened the gaming market. Falk emphasized that mobile games attract a diverse audience, including those with minimal experience in traditional video gaming.
Falk also pointed out the broadening variety within mobile games, which now includes not only casual games but also more complex titles and even esports games. This diversity has contributed to the strong and growing appeal of mobile gaming, making it a significant part of the overall gaming industry.
