Skyrim Players Unearth Mysterious ‘Do Not Delete’ Chest: A Hidden Glitch Revealed

Even though The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was first released in 2011, players are still discovering new secrets in this beloved RPG. As the game marks its 13th anniversary this year, Skyrim’s dedicated fanbase continues to explore and uncover hidden aspects of the game.

Recently, a player made an interesting find and shared it on the subreddit r/skyrim. They posted a screenshot showing a chest in their inventory labeled ‘Do Not Delete.’ The player, using a PS5, asked the community, “What is this ‘Do Not Delete’ chest? I bought it from a merchant.”

The chest quickly attracted attention from Skyrim fans, and the mystery behind it was soon explained. The ‘Do Not Delete’ chest is actually a glitch, not a planned feature. It appears in various homes and businesses throughout Skyrim due to an error in the game’s mechanics.

There are four types of these chests, and they are related to the Thieves Guild side quests in Riften. The chest is used to manage the bounties that players receive for theft-related actions. Each chest affects the game’s bounty system by setting the value of the bounty to half of the chest’s value. This means that when players commit theft, the resulting bounty will be half the value of the associated ‘Do Not Delete’ chest.

The Elder Scrolls Wiki notes that when an action is classified as theft in the game, the bounty imposed will correspond to half the value of the ‘Do Not Delete’ chest involved. NPCs will respond as if a theft occurred, even if no items are visibly missing.”

This discovery highlights how Skyrim continues to reveal new details, even after many years. The game’s enduring appeal is a testament to its depth and the passion of its community.
